For only the second time in the last ten years, Webster’s
senior footballers reached the final of the Murray-Fenwick Cup, which is
competed for every year by Angus schools’ senior boys’ teams. This
year’s final was on 15 June in Forfar, at Forfar Farmington’s ground and
our opponents were Monifieth High.
It
was a very good, hard-fought game, played in an excellent spirit. There
was a lot endeavour and plenty of skill on display, with Webster’s
looking the likelier side. With 90 minutes come and gone, however, and
with the score still at 0-0, a Monifieth forward broke away looking
suspiciously offside. He was tackled by Grant Dobbie, our goalkeeper,
and the referee, who had not been having a good game, awarded a
penalty. Monifieth duly scored to lift the trophy. It was a
disappointing end to a great Cup run, but the way the boys handled their
defeat was very commendable.
Pictured below is action from the game with the Webster’s defender
about to clear the ball before taking a crunching tackle from the
Monifieth forward.
